NANO Supermarket
The NANO Supermarket presents speculative nanotech products that may hit the shelves within the next ten years: medicinal candy, interactive wall paint, a wine which taste can be altered with microwaves, a twitter implant, invisible security spray and much more. Visit the shop, taste & test our products and experience the impact of nanotechnology on our everyday lives.
The debate–provoking nanotech products are submitted by designers, technologists and artists from around the world. They are selected by a jury of nanotech experts and design experts. Our products are both innovative and useful as well as uncanny and disturbing. They function as scenarios for potential nano futures, that help us decide what nano future we actually want.

What is Nano Technology?
Nanotechnology is an emerging field of science that deals with the manipulation of structures on an atomic and molecular scale – the size of one billionth of a meter. Nanotechnology is often seen as a trend in material science, but has much deeper implications.
Nanotechnology, or more precise nanotechnologies, is an umbrella term for various techniques that scientists use to operate on the very small nanoscale, ranging from nanostructures, nanocoatings, nano-encapsulation, nanocircuits, nanosensors, nanoparticles, and more. Existing applications range from sunscreens, from mobile phones to airplanes to medicines.
Although many people are aware that nanotechnology is very small, there is only little discussion on how this emerging technology will change our everyday lives. Nanotechnology radically intervenes with our notion of what is natural. It may realize the dreams people have of themselves and significantly improve our lives, but may also have its downsides. Hence the urgency to have a public debate on the impact of nanotechnology on our lives.

Product Examples
| Wallsmart – Interactive wallpaint
This paint gives you the freedom to change the colour of your walls with the push of a button. Just paint any surface once with the product and nano particles in the paint will give you the option to change colour just by choosing on from the accompanied computer program. If you get fed up with your choice just pick a different colour and the walls will change instantly into the desired hue.

| NanoSock – Self dressing sock
A lot of elderly people experience the loss of flexibility. In daily live this presents these people with a lot of practical problems. One of them, for instance, is bending over to pull up your socks while getting dressed. Many seniors now, have to rely on outside help to get them ready for the day. This is something that undermines their sense of independence and their overall dignity. The Nano Sock offers a solution to this problem. Through miniscule moving particles in the fabric, the sock pulls itself all the way up without any help. The energy to do this is generated entirely through the sock’s own movement that causes static electricity that powers the moving parts.

| SelectaDNA security paint
Once something gets stolen it’s often hard to trace back the original owner. To make the lives of thieves as hard as possible a lot of ingenious ideas already made their way to the anti-theft market. From engraving serial numbers into bike frames to GPS trackers in cars. But how about grandfathers clock or your blu-ray-player? How can you easily mark them? With the Selecta DNA Kit you can invisibly mark all your possessions through a unique strand of synthetic DNA. Just swipe a little bit of the DNA onto your most beloved stuff so that there is always proof of the fact that the items belong to you.

| NanoLift – Physical Photoshop
What would your life look like if you had the ability to change the shape of your face on a daily basis? Not just retouch parts through make-up but actually alter the physical form of your face. The Nano Lift is a product that could make this a reality. All it takes is one trip to the cosmetic surgery clinic, where they will inject a grid of tiny magnetic nano particles into your skin. From then on you can adjust these particles at home with the accompanied magnetic stick. The particles are connected with your skin, so adjusting the grid means physically changing your face.

| Programmable Wine
Each course of a fancy diner should be accompanied with a soothing wine. But why buy each different type separately when you can get them all out of one bottle? Nano Wine is a basic grape product that is mixed with nano sized flavour capsules. When exposed to microwaves these capsules release their flavour. Different wattage and duration of exposure means you create a different type of wine. Just open the vanilla capsules when you are in an Australian mood. Truffle puts you in an Italian atmosphere and for a smooth Merlot won’t have to do anything.

Call for Products
We call upon designers, technologists and artists to translate current nanotech trends into speculative, yet visionary products that stimulate debate on our nano tech future. We are seeking for well thought out and designed proposals that take technological, economical and political as well as societal trends in consideration: science faction rather than science fiction.
A selection of the entries will be presented in the Nano Supermarket and the accompanying publication. Entries are judged by an international jury of nanotech- and design experts upon originality, design quality, visual presentation, technological feasibility and the extend to which your design stimulates debate. The winning submission is awarded with a € 2500 price.
You can submit your product in two different categories: as a photoshop model or as a physical model. A selection of the best photoshop models will be displayed in the catalogue and on the website. A selection of the best physical models will also be displayed in the physical super market. Submission deadline is 31 May 2012.
Your submission consists of:
1. A short product pitch.
2. A description of the technological feasability of your product; which principles allow your product to function, how and when do you expect it to be produced?
3. A reflection on the socio-cultural implications of your product; what are the promises and fears of the underlying technology and how do you expect your product will change everyday life?
4. A photograph and a technical description of your physical model, OR a photoshop model (depending on which category you want to submit).
