Faustian Bargains and Pineapple Shampoo

Since the early days of the net, the electronic pastoral has lent itself to all sorts of dubious agendas pushed by science, the military and even libertarian tendencies. In the most recent configuration of this new media – new nature clash Merijn Oudenampsen and Jakob Proyer visited the Natural Habitat exhibition at Montevideo Amsterdam and find amidst the pixelated wilderness a difficult to swallow cocktail of Faustian bargains, hyper-modernism, and pineapple shampoo.

Fake for Real: A Memory Game about Reality

Fake for Real: A Memory Game about Reality
The Fake for Real Memory Game playfully visualizes the classical theme of Fake vs Real. Is everything that was once directly experienced, in our media society now replaced by simulations? Or are reproduction and imitation naturally part of life? Can you tell the fake from the real? See for yourself! Fake For Real!

We finish our Fake for Real series with this entertaining & educational present. The Memory Game comes in a beautiful box containing 60 cards, including a booklet with written explanations and an essay. Available at selected bookstores and museum shops worldwide.

A simpler version of the Memory Game (with 16 random cards) can also be played online. Oh, and in case you were wondering: Yes, you do support those good NextNature.net people by buying the box. Thanks Fans!

Call for Proposals: Designing for Next Nature

Call for Proposals: Babyphone - created by Koert van Mensvoort

Nowadays, children know more corporate logo’s and brands than bird or tree species. The average Western person has more worries about the instability of financial markets and mortgage interest deductions than about hurricanes or floods.

We are living in a time in which the “made” and the “born” are fusing. Hypoallergenic cats are already on the market. Plants are used as sensors, information displays and chemical factories. Animals are being augmented and branded. Plastic surgeons sculpt flesh to match retouched photographs in glossy magazines. In response to donor organ shortages, researchers are working on a 3D organ printer. Real nature is not green. It is out of control. Our technological world has become so intricate and uncontrollable that it has become a nature of its own. Games have become jobs. Second life is not sustainable. Digital world metaphors boomerang into our physical environment. Wine making has become an information science. Everyday robots give massages and take care of the children. RFID chips open doors, they might be infected, but nonetheless are edible.

How should we relate to these developments? How will we design? How will we build? How do we relate to our environment? How can we create humane technology? We call upon designers, artists, visionaries, film makers and other creative people to submit their visions, statements and ideas on how we will live in next nature.

SUBMISSION IS NOW CLOSED (deadline was 10 March 2008)

We received an overwhelming amount of proposals and thank all submitters for their creativity and effort. The jury selected six submissions for presentation at BVPS NextNature 2008 on May 17th 2008 in Los Angeles.

Jury consisted of: Kali Nikitas (OTIS), Lev Manovich (UCSD), Louise Sandhous (CalArts), Tim Durfee (Sci-arc), Adam Eeuwens, Rebecca Mendez (UCLA), Henri Lucas (UCLA), Nik Hafermaas (Art Center), Philip van Allen (Art Center), Kevin Wingate (Art Center), Anne Burdick (Art Center), Peter Lunenfeld (Art Center).

The Biggest Visual Power Show on Next Nature is a project by All Media, Art Center College of Design, TU/e Industrial Design and Sandberg Institute.

Friending, Ancient or Otherwise

By ALEX WRIGHT, Published in NY Times December 2, 2007

The growing popularity of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Second Life has thrust many of us into a new world where we make “friends” with people we barely know, scrawl messages on each other’s walls and project our identities using totem-like visual symbols.

We’re making up the rules as we go. But is this world as new as it seems?

Academic researchers are starting to examine that question by taking an unusual tack: exploring the parallels between online social networks and tribal societies. In the collective patter of profile-surfing, messaging and “friending,” they see the resurgence of ancient patterns of oral communication.

“Orality is the base of all human experience,” says Lance Strate, a communications professor at Fordham University and devoted MySpace user. He says he is convinced that the popularity of social networks stems from their appeal to deep-seated, prehistoric patterns of human communication. “We evolved with speech,” he says. “We didn’t evolve with writing.”

NAT Designing Nature – Exhibition & Debate

NAT Designing Nature expo

NAT, designing nature is about the interface where nature and culture, biology and design intertwine. An exhibition that is a cross between an exotic Garden of Eden and an illegal growshop, a home hothouse, and a biotech laboratory. The exhibition can be visited until 11 November 2007. Check out the video.

Along with the expo, Koert van Mensvoort wrote the essay ‘Natuur 2.0’, which describes our changing relation with Nature in 21st century and can be bought at the exhibition for 2 Euro.
